Réalisée en 1970-1971, cette oeuvre appartient à une période essentielle dans le parcours de Mohamed Melehi, où se rejoignent ses expériences américaines et sa réflexion sur l’identité visuelle marocaine. Formé à New York puis à Minneapolis au début des années 1960, l’artiste découvre les recherches du Hard Edge Painting, dont il retient la rigueur des aplats colorés, la netteté des contours et la puissance expressive de la couleur pure. De retour au Maroc, il ne se contente cependant pas d’adopter un langage international : il le transforme en l’inscrivant dans une réflexion profondément liée à son environnement culturel.
Présentée lors de sa grande exposition à la Galerie L’Atelier à Rabat, cette peinture marque l’affirmation d’un nouveau vocabulaire plastique. Les ondes qui traversent la surface deviennent les éléments fondateurs d’un langage visuel inédit, à la fois dynamique, populaire et universel. Leur mouvement continu évoque aussi bien les paysages, la lumière et les rythmes du Maroc que la volonté de faire sortir l’art de ses cadres traditionnels, une ambition partagée avec les artistes et enseignants de l’École des Beaux-Arts de Casablanca dont Melehi est alors l’une des figures majeures.
Le titre, Al-Maghrib Al Aqsa, renvoie au Maroc dans sa dénomination historique arabe, mais également à la notion du couchant évoquée dans le texte coranique, ce territoire où le soleil achève sa course. Cette dimension symbolique se prolonge dans le choix des couleurs. Le rouge et le vert, dominants dans la composition, rappellent naturellement les couleurs du drapeau marocain, tout en étant ici libérés de leur fonction emblématique pour devenir les acteurs d’une expérience optique vibrante et résolument moderne.
Cette oeuvre témoigne ainsi de la capacité de Melehi à faire dialoguer les avant-gardes internationales avec les références culturelles marocaines, donnant naissance à l’un des langages les plus singuliers de la modernité artistique du XXe siècle.

Created in 1970–1971, this work belongs to a pivotal period in Mohamed Melehi’s career, when his American experiences converged with his reflections on Moroccan visual identity. Trained in New York and then in Minneapolis in the early 1960s, the artist discovered the Hard Edge Painting movement, from which he adopted the rigour of flat areas of colour, the sharpness of contours and the expressive power of pure colour. On his return to Morocco, however, he did not simply adopt an international artistic language: he transformed it by embedding it within a reflection deeply rooted in his cultural environment.
Presented during his major exhibition at Galerie L’Atelier in Rabat, this painting marks the emergence of a new artistic vocabulary. The waves rippling across the surface become the building blocks of a unique visual language that is at once dynamic, accessible and universal. Their continuous movement evokes not only the landscapes, light and rhythms of Morocco but also the desire to liberate art from its traditional confines—an ambition shared with the artists and teachers of the Casablanca School of Fine Arts, of which Melehi was then one of the leading figures.
The title, Al-Maghrib Al Aqsa, refers to Morocco by its historical Arabic name, but also to the notion of the setting sun mentioned in the Quranic text, that land where the sun ends its journey. This symbolic dimension is extended through the choice of colours. Red and green, the dominant colours in the composition, naturally recall the colours of the Moroccan flag, whilst here being freed from their emblematic function to become the agents of a vibrant and resolutely modern optical experience.
This work thus bears witness to Melehi’s ability to create a dialogue between the international avant-garde and Moroccan cultural references, giving rise to one of the most distinctive languages of 20th-century artistic modernity.
